In April 2019 I visited a couple of countries in Central America, Panamá and Costa Rica. Here is the report of my Panamá visit.

My Panamá part of the trip was organized by Ecocircuitos Panamá, a local tour organizer. Everything worked very well, I was happy with their organization.

Itinerary

I arrived in Panamá City coming from Colombia. My guide picked me up at the airport and brought me to the hotel in Panamá City.

The next day a tour of the Soberania National Park started the bird watching in Panamá. In the afternoon we drove back to Panamá City for one more night.

The next day I was brought to the domestic airport for a flight to David. From there it was a 2 hour drive to the Mount Totumas Cloud Forest Lodge, the last hour was on a pretty bad dirt road. I stayed in the lodge for a couple of nights. The lodge has very nice accommodations and good food.

The hike up Mount Totumas was pretty strenuous, but I enjoyed it. During my stay at the lodge I did a lot of bird watching. I did see the Resplendent Quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno, german: Quetzal, french: Quetzal resplendissant), the sacred bird of the Mayas and Aztecs, which was one of my main objectives. There were hummingbird feeders all over the lodge area, so I saw a lot of hummingbirds.

From the Mount Totumas Lodge it was a two hour drive to Boquette, where I stayed for three nights. Around Boquette is again a lot of bird life. I did several hikes in that area, including a 5.5 hour hike around Volcán Barú.

From Boquette we drove back to David for my return flight to Panamá City, where I stayed for another couple of nights. I visited the Panamá Canal and the old town of Panamá City.

From Panamá I continued on to Costa Rica for the third country of my trip.

Observations

The visit to Panamá was mostly about wildlife, plus a brief visit to the Panamá Canal and to Old Town Panamá City.

The bird life is amazing, it was well worth the trip.

Panamá uses the US Dollar as currency, so that made life easy in that respect. All the accommodations and meals were very good. Prices are somewhat lower than in the USA.

Panamá is an easy country to visit, no hassle with visas, it is well set up for tourists. I enjoyed my visit to Panamá.
